Whether an area is prone to hurricanes, flooding, or wildfires, emergency preparedness checklists are created to help people prepare for disasters and their aftermath. This scorecard analyzes emergency preparedness checklists across all 50 states for the inclusion of items that directly support sexual and reproductive health. The results demonstrate a haphazard manner of inclusion and opportunities for states to better support reproductive health and community resilience in emergency preparedness planning.
Key Findings
All 50 states provide emergency preparedness checklists; however, their inclusion of SRH items is haphazard at best and largely fails to educate residents on the importance of sexual health emergency preparedness.
Forty-eight states included medication on their checklists, but none specifically mentioned birth control pills or other hormone medications.
Twenty-six states included menstrual products.
Only two states specifically included SRH products such as condoms, pregnancy tests, and birthing supplies. 96% of state emergency preparedness checklists ignore sexual health.
