To the editor:
Here in California we pride ourselves on protecting our environment and leading the nation in confronting the ever more urgent challenge of climate change. So it's particularly disturbing to know that fracking is set to boom here.
Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is a dangerous oil and gas extraction technique that threatens our state's water, air, wildlife, public health and climate. California faces an impending fracking boom because our state may have the largest shale oil reserves in the country. Yet state officials don't currently track when or where fracking is occurring, let alone protect California from its many dangers.
The best way to protect California is to ban fracking now. The risks are simply too great.
