Arizona snails would be on endangered list under proposal
By The Associated Press

PHOENIX - Two types of snails native only to eastern Arizona will be placed on the endangered species list under a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposal.

The agency says the population of San Bernardino springsnails has declined because of groundwater pumping and the introduction of pesticides. It now is found in less than half the areas where it formerly lived in Cochise County.

The Three Forks springsnail has become prey to nonnative crayfish and Elk grazing has also destroyed its habitat. It is found in the White Mountains of Apache County.

The agency's proposal is to designate six conservation areas, totaling about 13 acres.
