Press Conference 4pm Today at COP28 Spotlights U.S. Role in Fossil Fuel Phaseout Push

DUBAI— Climate advocates will hold a press conference today on the end game of the United Nations COP28 climate summit and the United States’ role in pressing for a fossil fuel phaseout in the final agreement.

The latest text merely suggests nations “could” reduce fossil fuel demand and production by around mid-century. As the world’s largest oil and gas producer and largest planned expander of oil and gas through 2050, the United States’ actions and influence play an outsize role as the talks approach a final agreement. African negotiators and advocates have said without adequate funding from developed countries they can’t commit to a fossil fuel phaseout.
