Groups file notice regarding Florida panther
By The Associated Press

MIAMI -- Three nonprofit organizations have filed a joint notice of intent to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service over its handling of the endangered Florida panther.

The Center for Biological Diversity, Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility and the Council of Civic Associations filed the notice in Washington on Tuesday.

The groups filed a petition in September stating that 3 million acres in South Florida must be spared from further development in order for the Florida panther to recover.

Leaders for the organizations say the agency should have responded to the petition within 90 days, and has not.

A message left for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service seeking comment was not immediately returned.
