ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT PROFILEYEAR PLACED ON LIST: 2001 CRITICAL HABITAT: The National Marine Fisheries Service decided not to designate critical habitat because it felt identification of such habitat would increase the threat of poaching for white abalone. RECOVERY PLAN: 2008 RANGE: Near California’s Channel Islands THREATS: Commercial and recreational fishing, global warming, ocean acidification, and bacterial and parasitic infections POPULATION TREND: Recent surveys estimate that only a few thousand white abalone remain. |
