Action timeline

April 20, 2010 – The Center filed a petition to designate the MacGillivray’s seaside sparrow as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act.

July 12, 2011 – The Center reached a landmark agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that mandated protection decisions for 757 species, including MacGillivray’s seaside sparrow.

September 26, 2011 – The Fish and Wildlife Service issued a positive 90-day finding on the petition for the sparrow, deciding that it may warrant federal protection.

February 13, 2013 – After the Service failed to issue its required 12-month finding on whether to protect MacGillivray’s seaside sparrow, the Center filed a 60-day notice of intent to sue the agency.

September 23, 2013 – The Center reached a legal agreement requiring the Fish and Wildlife Service to make a decision on Endangered Species Act protection for the sparrow by 2018.
