1.  CLINTON DELAYS MEXICAN GRAY WOLF RELEASE-
    CALLS NEEDED URGENTLY

To avoid controversy during the congressional appropriations process,
the Clinton administration has decided to delay the final decision on a
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan to reintroduce the endangered
Mexican gray wolf to the Gila Headwater's Ecosystem, straddling the
New Mexico/Arizona border. In the U.S., all Mexican gray wolves live
in captivity. A small population persists in Mexico.

A politically motivated delay of a few months, could mean a delay of a
year or more for the wolf since it is likely to push the final decision
beyond the biological timeline necessary to reintroduce wolves in
1997. With each passing month, the captive bred wolves are less fit to
survive in thewild. With each passing generation, captive born wolves
are less genetically fit to survive.

Please call Secretary Babbitt today. Tell him to sign the Record of
Decision to reintroduce wolves to the Southwest immediately, before it
is too late.

Bruce Babbitt , Secretary of Interior:   202-208-7351
