1. SOUTHWEST
CENTER ACTIVISTS NAMED "1996 DEEP ECOLOGISTS OF THE YEAR"
Southwest
Center for Biological Diversity co-founders Kieran
Suckling and Peter Galvin
have been named the 1996 Deep Ecologists
of the Year by the Fund For Wild
Nature. The award is given for
exemplary effort in environmental protection.
Previous winners
include Judi Bari, Dave Foreman, Reed Noss, Karen Picket,
and
Jasper Carlton. This is the first time the award has been
jointly
convened. Kieran Suckling is the director of the Southwest
Center,
Peter Galvin is a board member currently working for the
Southwest
Forest Alliance.
2. EIGHT ARRESTED AT LOGGING
DEMONSTRATION- KAIBAB NATIONAL FOREST
VOWS TO
VIOLATE CLINTON ORDER TO HALT SALVAGE LOGGING
Eight activists were
arrested in the Grand Canyon National Park on
December 16th, protesting
efforts by the Kaibab National Forest to
violate an order by the Clinton
Administration to halt further logging
under the infamous Logging Without
Laws Rider. In demonstrations
sponsored by the Southwest Center and the
Student Environmental
Action Coalition, 40 protestors occupied the Kaibab
National Forest
Supervisors office in Williams, AZ, then relocated to the
South Rim of
the Grand Canyon National Park. Protestors were arrested
after
banners proclaiming "Don't Clearcut the Grand Canyon" were hung
from
a flag pole.
Following massive public outcry including demonstrations,
full page
newspaper advertisements, and a promise by the Southwest Center
to
wage a civil disobediance campaign, the Kaibab National Forest
scaled
back the Bridger Salvage Timber Sale from 30 million to 17
million
board feet. The Forest only managed to advertise 7 million board
feet,
however, when the Clinton Administration announced that no
further
salvage timber sales will be allowed under the Logging Without
Laws
rider. According to the directive, salvage sales will not be
permitted
unless they were "advertised for sale" by Friday, December 13th.
The
Forest, however, plans to log 10 million board feet under the
Logging
Without Laws Rider.
3. 10,000 OPPOSE BRIDGE AT
REDROCK CROSSING
The Grand Canyon Chapter of the Sierra Club has
presented a list of
10,541 signatures from around the world, opposing a
bridge at Red
Rock Crossing, to the U. S. Forest Service. The agency has
plans to
build a bridge across one of the most photographed river views in
the
west.
