1. POLL:
ARIZONANS SUPPORT LOGGING INJUNCTION BY 2-1
A poll by the Behavior
Research Center determined that both
Democatic and Republican Arizonans
support a 13 month old court
injunction barring all logging on all National
Forests in Arizona and
New Mexico by a margin of 2-1. Ages 18 to 24 supported
the injunction
88% to 10%, those over 55 supported it 49% to 36%.
According to the
pollster, "as younger adults age and become more active
voters,
support for these types of environmental protection measures
will
probably grow."
2. FOREST SERVICE CLAIMS SALVAGE TREES DO
NOT BELONG TO ENVIROS
EVEN AFTER BEING PAID
FOR
Even though the Forest Service accepted nearly $4,000 from
the
Southwest Center as payment for the rights to log on the
Rustler
Salvage Timber Sale, the Forest Service claims that the trees are
not
the "property" of the Southwest Center until they are cut down
and
taken out of the Coronado National Forest. The Forest has
threatened
to resell the trees if they are not logged by October 14.
The Center
has objected on the grounds that the trees have been paid
for,
pointing out that timber companies are given possession of
trees
before they are cut.
The Southwest Center has appealed a
previous court order allowing the
sale to go forward under the Salvage Rider.
A hearing is scheduled for
October 11th in Seattle.
The Rustler
Salvage Sale controversy has generated tremendous press
coverage, including
several television specials in English and Spanish.
3. ROBIN
SILVER WINS 26% OF REPUBLICAN PRIMARY VOTE
Dr. Robin Silver, Conservation
Chair of the Southwest Center, won
26% of Republican vote in his attempt to
unseat Representative John
Shaddeg. Shaddeg, head of GOPAC, the Republican
fundraising machine,
outspent Silver 5 to
